How Athletic Training Can Help You Reach Peak Performance

peak-performance

Whether you are bouncing back after an injury or developing new skills, physical therapy can help you reach your peak performance.

One of the great things about making athletic goals for yourself is that there is always room to grow. As soon as you reach one goal, you can make another and begin working on something in a new way. Creating a personal record is a great accomplishment, but the experience of victory doesn’t last nearly as long as the excitement of trying to reach that PR in the first place.

That’s the great thing about athletic training. Your peak performance is something that you define, and something that you constantly have the ability to redefine. What matters most is that you get out there and keep working at it, day after day, until you are able to reach your next goal.

1. Peaking at the Top

It is amazing to watch professional athletes push themselves to accomplish new goals. Have you ever seen an athlete master one sport, only to push their way into another and accomplish their goals all over again? Olympic sprinters take on the slopes at the winter games, and college athletes win national titles in multiple sports for just this reason. When you push yourself to do your best with ongoing athletic training, you can reach your peak only to identify a new summit and then overcome that as well.

Working with a physical therapist can help you to reach your peak performance. Here are a few advantages:

  • Overcome Injury. When an injury develops, working with a physical therapist is one of the best ways to overcome that injury and to start putting pain behind you. Physical therapy treatment programs are custom designed to each individual and each injury, which means that the exercises and strength-building activities you are guided through are unique to your needs.
  • Re-focus Your Strengths. In addition to helping you to overcome injuries, physical therapy can help you to improve strength in areas that you perhaps haven’t focused on before. Rather than jumping directly into a new form of activity, it makes sense to train your body to react to the new form of stimulation by improving your muscular strength and range of motion.
  • Develop Healthy Habits: Working with a physical therapist can help you to remain focused on healthy habits as you take on new goals, as well. For example, regular exercise, a healthy diet, and a strong focus on hydration are fundamental in improving your physical fitness level, and a physical therapist is a great asset to have in that process as you also focus on rebuilding strength and improving muscular functionality.

2. Bouncing Back After Injury

One of the most common reasons that people turn to physical therapy is for support with overcoming an injury. In those early moments following an injury, it is easy to lose sight of your hopes and dreams and to begin questioning your ability to ever push yourself again. Physical therapy can help you bounce back, stronger than ever, helping to ensure that your peak is always in front of you.

The key to building strength and athletic ability is to always take it one step at a time. Push yourself to reach your goal by making realistic goals for yourself and taking on the obstacles in front of you day by day. After an injury, those obstacles may seem even more difficult to overcome, but physical therapy can help you reach those goals. For guidance and support with getting started, talk to your physical therapist about what athletic goals you hope to reach next.

I could barely walk into OBTS six weeks ago. I had very bad lower back and hip pain. The progress has been life changing for me. I always walk out of there with little or no pain. The staff, Laura, Dr Diane, Angie and, of course, Peggy, have taught me so much to keep my pain at bay. I highly recommend this team.

I am a PTA student that was required 16 hours of observation time. I had the pleasure of completing my hours at this Valpo location. The staff is incredibly friendly. They were quick to make me feel at home. In a way I was sad to leave, but happy to continue on. I hope to eventually work in this field with a work family this caring and knowledgeable about their profession.

My first experience with OBTS was very positive. During the course of my 13 therapy sessions I worked with many different therapists and all of them were professional and competent. They were able to help me effectively control my pain without medication using their therapy program. Unfortunately, they could not get my physical condition back to the same ability as before. However, this is due to the fact that it was later determined by my doctors that I required surgery. I plan on returning to OBTS for my post-op physical therapy and have already scheduled my evaluation appointment. Scheduling seems to be a challenge sometimes but that's probably an indication of their patient's satisfaction and good reviews. Thank you OBTS!

Everyone that worked with me was helpful. I enjoyed watching the staff interact as they worked as they laughed and smiled making me feel that it was fun to exercise. My knee pain is less and I look forward to having the same results with my back.

I have read lots of reviews that say "the entire staff of ..." is great, and you know that it is BS.. .. Butt at OBTS that statement is true. The person answering the phone, appointment setting they work around my schedule. It is truly a team concept. Everyone that has work with/on me keeps me focus on getting healthy to play golf.... Even those employees that haven't work with/on me are upbeat, positive and encouraging both their patients and me..... follow up phone calls, positive, hand written notes of encouragement, reminding me to do my homework so I can play golf this year. Great Employees, Great Business!.

I’ve had an incredible experience here at OBTS. In just two and half weeks I’ve seen and felt remarkable results. My hip mobility has improved by 30%. I credit the excellent physical therapists and the deep tissue laser therapy for my gains. I’ve gone from walking with a limp and pain everyday to walking normally and know that I’ll be back to running in the future. Every single person is warm and friendly here. Great place!
