Kinesio Taping

What does “Kinesio taping” mean?

Where cutting edge technology meets old-school pain management, you’ll find an innovative remedy such as Kinesio taping. The process uses elastic therapeutic tape, which is exponentially more stretchable than traditional types of elastic bandage. Once this tape is stretched out and then secured around the problematic area, the tape will exert a therapeutic pulling force, while still allowing you free range of motion.

The acrylic adhesive component in Kinesio tape is activated by body heat, meaning that as soon as your physical therapist applies the taping system, it will begin working. Yet the cotton fibers that also comprise the material wick moisture away. That means that sweating and getting the area wet isn’t as much of an issue as it was with the “ace” bandages injured athletes and other patients were once given.

What is the science behind Kinesio taping?

The pulling action achieved through Kinesio taping helps hold the problem joints and muscles in place as you move through your daily routines. As you’re doing so, the tape draws skin away from the muscles, allowing crucial fluids and blood to circulate more freely. This improved circulation lessens swelling and speeds healing. Some evidence suggests that the tape’s exceptional holding abilities also help to correct misaligned muscles and ligaments.

Of course, it’s not just the fabric itself that results in these benefits. Physical therapists are trained in various wrapping techniques, depending on the site of the injury or chronic pain, as well as the specific problem. Determining the exact placement and shaping of the Kinesio tape, along with which direction the “pull” should go, are all part of the skill needed in order to promote healing. For example, certain injuries call for Y- or X-shaped applications, while smaller, more fragile areas heal better with an I-shaped wrapping.

What problems can Kinesio taping treat?

When properly applied — and after the patient has been carefully evaluated — Kinesio taping often allows athletes to get back on the field. Other injured patients find their daily activities made easier, with the support of the taping holding tender areas in place, and preventing over-use of problematic joints and muscles.

Common conditions our trained physical therapists often treat with Kinesio taping include:

  • Back sprains and strains
  • Neck aches
  • Shoulder injuries
  • Knee pain
  • Sports injuries

If any of these complaints sound similar to yours, call our office for an appointment. Our expert team will evaluate you for the best therapies, including Kinesio taping, to target your injuries.

Everyone that worked with me was helpful. I enjoyed watching the staff interact as they worked as they laughed and smiled making me feel that it was fun to exercise. My knee pain is less and I look forward to having the same results with my back.

I have read lots of reviews that say "the entire staff of ..." is great, and you know that it is BS.. .. Butt at OBTS that statement is true. The person answering the phone, appointment setting they work around my schedule. It is truly a team concept. Everyone that has work with/on me keeps me focus on getting healthy to play golf.... Even those employees that haven't work with/on me are upbeat, positive and encouraging both their patients and me..... follow up phone calls, positive, hand written notes of encouragement, reminding me to do my homework so I can play golf this year. Great Employees, Great Business!.

My first experience with OBTS was very positive. During the course of my 13 therapy sessions I worked with many different therapists and all of them were professional and competent. They were able to help me effectively control my pain without medication using their therapy program. Unfortunately, they could not get my physical condition back to the same ability as before. However, this is due to the fact that it was later determined by my doctors that I required surgery. I plan on returning to OBTS for my post-op physical therapy and have already scheduled my evaluation appointment. Scheduling seems to be a challenge sometimes but that's probably an indication of their patient's satisfaction and good reviews. Thank you OBTS!

I’ve had an incredible experience here at OBTS. In just two and half weeks I’ve seen and felt remarkable results. My hip mobility has improved by 30%. I credit the excellent physical therapists and the deep tissue laser therapy for my gains. I’ve gone from walking with a limp and pain everyday to walking normally and know that I’ll be back to running in the future. Every single person is warm and friendly here. Great place!
